How to Behave in 2018
How do we behave
In the face of
And deplorable treatment
Of human beings
And depletion of human rights?
Do we behave quietly,
Silenciosamente, sin voz
Do we simply get on
With our lives, pretending
All is well, todo bien?
Do we loudly roar?
Gritando con voces feroces
Naming the injustices
And the rulers who
Create policies and laws
At the behest of wealth?
Will we stand up for peace?
¿Queremos paz, o no?
Do we reach for the
Higher ground of human compassion?
Do we rise up?
¿Qué queremos? Justicia!
Nada mas, nada menos
Will we remember the betrayal?
Will we proudly declare,
Black Lives Matter?
Will we embrace our immigrant
Hermanas y hermanos?
Will we call Muslims
Our sisters and brothers?
Will we embrace our sisters' dreams?
Las mujeres, nuestras madres,
Hermanas, primas, sobrinas, amigas
Will we damand self-determination
Will we stand arm-in-arm
With lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans
People, until they are free to be?
Will we demand self-determination
And land rights for the original people
Of this land, la gente indigena?
Will we stand united with Chinese,
Japanese, Filipino, and Southeast
Asian people who also built this
Nation and suffered at the hands
Of racial and ethnic prejudice?
Will we raise our fists for the
Rights of workers for a liveable wage?
Will we demand affordable housing for everyone?
Will we fight for healthcare for all people?
¿Qué vamos a hacer este año?
What will we do to drag this nation
Out of the darkness?
¿Qué vamos a hacer?
Resistence, resistencia, gente
Like mighty lions
Loudly and deliberately
Sounding the calls for
Justice, equality, equity and peace
Justicia, igualdad, equidad y paz
No justice, no peace
Until uncertaintly fades
And human dignity smiles upon us
